The origin of the festival dates back to about 370 years ago (1643), when Mitsushige Niwa, lord of Nihonmatsu Castle, moved the Nihonmatsu Shrine to its current location at Kurigasaku in 1661, and held the festival in 1664, based on his belief that “in order to conduct good government, first of all, the people must be encouraged to respect the gods”. The most lively part of the festival is on the first day of the festival, when all the taiko stands from the seven towns are gathered. The taiko floats are paraded magnificently through the city with the lively calls and music of young men. The 2,000 lanterns that flicker and burn red in the night sky catch the heart of all who see them.
