The origin of this dance is said to be the Hosai Nembutsu, which became very popular in Edo (now Tokyo) in the early Edo period (1603-1868), and was performed in front of the grave of Kanbei Sawamura in the middle of the 17th century to comfort his soul. The current Jangara Nembutsu Dance is the result of incorporating folk songs from Iwaki into this Hosai Nembutsu and reorganizing what had been criticized for being too rough into a unique Nembutsu Dance. Lasting about 20 minutes, the dance is led by three drummers and surrounded by about 10 gong players, who dance to a dynamic rhythm while turning backward.
