The “Armored Horse Race,” in which riders compete for a 1,000-meter lap with fluttering ancestral flags, and the “Kamihata Battle,” in which hundreds of horsemen compete for the sacred flag flown in the air, are also held.形民俗文化財に指定される伝統馬事文化。相馬氏の祖「平小次郎将門」が一千有余年もの昔、新しい軍事力として馬の活用を考え、下総国小金ヶ原（現在の千葉県北西部）の牧に野生の馬を放牧し、敵兵に見立てた馬を捕らえ、妙見に奉納したことが始まりとされている。その後、相馬氏が奥州行方郡（現在の南相馬市）に移り住んだ後も、代々の相馬領主によって絶えず執り行われてきた。現在では、三社（相馬中村神社・相馬太田神社・相馬小高神社）の祭礼として、相馬家当主を総大将に約４００騎の騎馬武者が先祖伝来の甲冑に身を固め、勇壮華麗かつ豪華絢爛に戦国絵巻を繰り広げている。 橘 斌 氏：平成16年度地域伝統芸能大賞支援賞受賞 相馬野馬追の陰の立役者「甲冑師」A spectacular festival with more than 1,000 years of historySoma Nomaoi is a traditional horse festival held on the last Saturday, Sunday, and Monday of May mainly in Minamisoma and Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, and has been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan. The founder of the Soma clan, Taira Kojiro Masakado, considered the use of horses as a new military force more than 1,000 years ago. It is said that the tradition began when wild horses were herded onto pastureland in Koganegahara, Shimousa Province (present-day northwestern Chiba Prefecture), and horses that looked like enemy soldiers were captured and dedicated to the Myoken. Since then, even after the Soma clan moved to Oshu-Namekata-gun (present-day Minamisoma City), the ceremony has been continuously performed by successive generations of Soma lords. Today, as a joint festival of the three shrines—Soma Nakamura Shrine, Soma Ota Shrine, and Soma Odaka Shrine—, about 400 mounted warriors, clad in ancestral armor, are led by the head of the Soma clan as the commander-in-chief.
