Pillars of fire burn proudly all over town! The prayers in the flames singe the night sky.A fire festival held around various locations of Mishima every year on January 15th, the first day of Little New Year. Kindling is coiled around a sacred tree cut from the mountain to make a pillar several meters high, and New Year’s decorations and lucky charms collected by children from each household in the town are then attached. It is called the Sainokami and is lit in the evening. It is a traditional event in which prayers are offered to the blazing flames for a bountiful harvest, protection against misfortune, and the safety of the household. The sight of the flames dancing wildly in the darkness of the night is magnificent. According to legend, warming yourself by the fire and rubbing the soot on your body will keep you safe and in good health.A trio of distinctive three-lion dances to pray for a bountiful harvest! Heroic shishimai (lion dances) that have repelled armies according to legendThis festival features sanbiki shishimai (three-lion dances) passed down in three buraku (hamlets): Takihora, which is in the Kaminagaori area of Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, as well as Higashikata and Nakahora, both of which are in the Shimonagaori area. These dances are held in Kaminagaori and Shimonagaori every two years to pray for a bountiful harvest, business prosperity, and other boons. Takihora hosts the heroic Yama-gakari no Shishi (lions in charge of the mountains), Higashikata hosts the distinctive Hanasui-gakari no Shishi (lions in charge of flower drinking), and Nakahora hosts the graceful Niwatori-gagari no Shishi (lions in charge of garden insects), all of which engage in dances for the gods. It is said that, during the Boshin war, as the new government army was passing by on the day of the festival, they mistook the sounds of the flutes and drums for the sounds of the enemy forces and retreated.Date:Every year on January 15thPlace:Mishima Shrine, various locations in Mishima TownBy train: 15-minute walk from JR Aizu-Miyashita Station (Mishima Shrine)Mishima Town Tourism AssociationDate:Every year on May 4Place:Suwa ShrineCar: About 20 minutes by car from the Nihonmatsu I.C., which is on the Tōhoku ExpresswayCulture Division, Nihonmatsu City Board of Education開催日:毎年1月15日場所:三島神社、三島町内各所電車:JR「会津宮下駅」より徒歩約15分(三島神社)三島町観光協会0241-48-5000開催日:毎年5月4日場所:諏訪神社車:東北自動車道「二本松I.C.」 Sainokami has been passed down as a source of pride for the region, conveying the culture and spirit of Oku-Aizu, as well as a shrine to pray for good fortune. The three lions are referred to as Tarojishi, Jirojishi, and Menjishi, and they perform around ten musical numbers, including Michigiri and Maikomi. *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
