Priests serve as the gakujin (performers), occasionally humorously depicting the entire process of rice cultivation through dialogue and gestures. The performance style, reminiscent of kyogen (comic interludes), reflects the development of performing arts and the unique character of the region. The exact origins of the ceremony are unclear, but it is said to predate the Muromachi period, making it a tradition that has been carried on for 400 years. Smiles and friendly exchanges in the local dialect add to its charm. The “Rakujinkai” revived the long-interrupted kagura and works to preserve and pass down both kagura and the rice planting tradition, while the “Otaue Preservation Society” organizes the rice planting festival and trains future successors. Together, these two groups are dedicated to the preservation and development of the shrine’s traditional performing arts.
