An atmosphere that completely changes depending on whether it is day or night! Majestic and magnificent dances passed down from one generation to the nextThe Yachi Bugaku dances performed during the Yachi Donga Festival are also called the Hayashike Bugaku dances because they have been passed down from one generation to the next by the Hayashi family of Shinto priests at Yachi Hachiman-gu Shrine. These dances include ten songs, all of which have their own atmospheres, such as Ni no Mai, a dance during which the dancers wear masks that bear expressions of happiness or suffering, and Ryo O, an elegant dance during which the dancers wear safflower-dyed clothing. As onlookers watch these majestic, dignified dances, which are led by the sounds of ryuteki (dragon flutes) and shoko (small gongs), they will no doubt find that their time spent doing so is special. The teams run with their poles topped with pine leaves to see who can burn theirs faster. A fire festival held through the night of New Year’s EveThis festival runs through the night of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day at Dewasanzan Shrine. Therefore it is also referred to as the “New Year’s Eve night festival.” The highlight of the festival is the “Great Torch Pulling,” in which torches in the shape of tutsugamushi, which mimic demons, are burned. Around 23:00, at the signal of a special loud chant, all the young people participating in the festival run with their poles. The winners are determined by how fast the teams raise their poles and burn them. The whole process is a kind of divination predicting the harvest and fish catching of the following year. To ring in the New Year, rituals delineating the Haguro Yamabushi region, known as “Kokubu,” as well as the “changing of the flame” are also held.Date:Every year on the three-day holiday in September that includes Respect for the Aged DayPlace:Yachi Hachiman-gu ShrineCar: About 15 minutes from the Higashine I.C., which is on the Tohoku ExpresswayYachi Hachiman-gu ShrineDate:Every year on December 31Place:Ideha Shrine (Mt.
