There are various theories about its origin, but one says that it originated from a song called Dontsuki Uta (earth pounding song), which was sung during the Taisho period (1912-1926) when workers were pounding earth to create Lake Tokura in Obanazawa, in order to help them forget the hardships of the hard work and to keep in sync. The dance was adapted from songs passed down by workers from all over the country. To this was added a dance performed with a sedge hat decorated with paper flowers representing the safflower, a specialty of the area. These days, there are various dances such as the splendid women's dance, the majestic men's dance, and the Obanazawa's hat twirling Hanagasa dance. Hanagasa Odori is widely popular, with its lyrics that describe a journey along the Mogami River to sightseeing spots in the prefecture and the easy-to-clap dance, along with the shouts of "yassho, makasho." The Yamagata Hanagasa Festival is held every year in Yamagata City from August 5 to 7 with about 10,000 dancers, while the Obanazawa Hanagasa Festival is held every year on August 27 and 28 with about 3,000 dancers.
