The dance is a ritual prayer for a bountiful harvest, complete with dancers in traditional hanagasa (flower hats).The Fukura Dengaku dance is performed at the Fukura Festival, a major event held annually on May 4th and 5th at Omonoimi Shrine Fukura Kuchi-no-Miya (a local branch shrine of Omonoimi located at the summit of Mt. Chokai in Fukura, Yuza-cho). Dengaku is a Shinto art that ritualizes the rice-planting process, and this graceful dance is performed as part of prayers for an abundant harvest as well as to entertain the deities of the rice paddies. The Fukura Dengaku dance, also known as the hanagasa or flower-hat dance, has been passed down through the generations since the Kamakura Period. Each of the dancers wears a large hat adorned with beautiful flowers and long zig-zag paper streamers, along with the traditional kimono sporting a black-and-white crest and hakama, and carries katana swords at the waist, plus a binzasara percussion instrument. This is a highly sophisticated dance with many elements. When the dance is over, the dancers remove their flower hats, tossing them into the audience, who rushes to grab them, as they are thought to bring good luck and protection for a good harvest. It is believed that if you are lucky enough to even get one flower, one decoration, or one streamer, that is enough to bring happiness. The performance is an engaging one, with lots of people joining in the fun.
