Kemanai Bon Odori, which boasts a long history and lasting traditions, was designated as a Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1972 and as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1998, thanks to the fact that it is rich in emotion, valuable in showing the transition process, and remarkable in its regional characteristics. Kemanai Bon Odori is composed of two parts: “Dainosaka,” which is danced to the accompaniment of large drums and flutes, and “Jinku,” which is danced only with unaccompanied singing. The male dancers wear a crested kimono and kedashi, while the women wear tomesode kimono or houmongi (“visiting kimono”) and pink colored kedashi, and both men and women wear tenugui (hand towels) that cover their face. Many of the songs are sung to celebrate a good harvest or to introduce local scenery and customs..
