Around 1601, the fall of the Onodera Clan at Nishimonai Castle occurred. In memory of his lord, the surviving retainer is said to have combined the dance with the “ghost dance” performed on the grounds of the Hosenji Temple in the Nishimonai region. The dance became known nationally as of 1935, when it was performed at the 9th National Local Dance and Folk Music Conference. Nishimondai Bon Odori is currently regarded as one of Japan’s three major styles of bon-odori dance. It is characterized by a stark contrast between wild musical accompaniment and beautiful, elegant movements. The dance consists of the “ondo” and “ganke” types of music. It showcases quiet and elegant hand and foot movements, and the signature turning-out of the fingers as special accents.
