The Yokote Okuribon Festival is held to commemorate these people. It is said to have begun when the people of Yanagimachi (now Chuomachi) built houseboats and attached willow branches to them. Strips of paper were hung on the branches, each with a posthumous Buddhist name for the deceased, and the boats were set out on the riverbank as a prayer for their souls. The boats weigh about 750 kg and are about 7 m long. They are lit by candles, and have square lanterns with "Three worlds, all spirits", i.e., the souls of the deceased, “abundant harvests” and "a safe town" inscribed in large letters. Strips of paper in five colors are hung from two long green bamboo stalks. On the evening of August 16, the boats, led by tall takahari lanterns, are carried by about thirty young men from the local community. Urged on by shouts of “sai-sai,” they gather at the Janosaki riverbank to send off the spirits of their ancestors.
