Many visitors are drawn to the area for its history and artistry, in particular for its connections to sennin kagura. 子頭を回して村々を巡り歩き、息災延命、悪魔祓いの祈祷を行った際に、宿泊先の民家等で古風な舞を演じたもの）の一種で、東北地方の日本海側に広く分布している。根子（ねっこ）番楽は、源氏の遺臣又は平家の落人たちが根子村に移り住んで行われるようになったと言われ、各地に伝わる番楽の中でも、古式をよく現代に残している能楽の一つであると注目されている。特に、歌詞の内容が文学的に優れていること、舞の形式が、能楽の先駆とされ室町時代以降に流行した幸若舞（こうわかまい）以前のものであることが賞賛されている。また、舞は、テンポの速いリズミカルな囃子に合わせて舞う勇壮活発な武士舞と古雅で静かなリズムが特徴の古典的舞の二つに大別される。A type of Shugendo kagaku, developed out of the traditional winter hunter (matagi) villages Bangaku is a type of kagura originally performed by sennin, from ascetics of the Shinto-Buddhist Shugendo school. (From November through the traditional New Year, the traditional lion-dog head (shishigashira) was paraded around the village as a prayer for health and longevity, and to exorcise evil spirits from the environment. Bangaku, which recreated ancient dances, was held at the same time, at local farmhouses where the sennin practitioners would stay). It is widespread amongst the Tohoku area on the sea of Japan side of the country. Nekko Bangaku, on the other hand, is said to originate with the settlement of the defeated retainers of the Minamoto and Taira clans in Nekko village. Amongst the various types of bangaku in Japan, this one is noted as one type of nogaku (noh theater) that retains its ancient form to this day. Due to the literary sophistication of the lyrics, as well as the form of the dance, it is believed to even predate Kowakamai dance—precursor to nogaku—, which was popular from the Muromachi Period onward. Bangaku is acknowledged and admired as such.
