The festival is a performance festival in which people carry ”kanto”, which are lanterns hung from large bamboo poles, and perform to the sound of taiko drums and flute music. The festival is a traditional event in Akita City with a history of over 270 years, held in midsummer to ward off illness and evil spirits. The festival is said to have been originally held during the Horeki Era (1751-1764) of the Edo Period as a ritual to banish the sleep demon. At that time people decorated bamboo strips with wishes on them, paraded through the town and finally let the strips float down the river.This event has been developed to the Kanto Festival. The lit lanterns evoke the image of golden ears of rice, which is a symbol of the festival's prayer for a good harvest. The largest of the lanterns, measuring 12 meters long and weighing 50 kg with 46 smaller lanterns hanging from it, is moved from the palm of the hand to the forehead, to the shoulders, and to the waist while maintaining balance. It is a spectacular feat of skill that makes even those watching sweat. About 280 kanto lanterns illuminate the Akita night sky.
