Tsuzureko Grand Drum Festival, the largest Taiko drum parade in JapanThe Tsuzureko Grand Drum Festival is a traditional event that has been passed down in the Tsuzureko district of Kitaakita City. The two settlements of Tsuzureko, Kamimachi and Shimomachi, are divided into those supporting the Tokugawa (Kamimachi) and those supporting the Toyotomi (Shimomachi) and take turns playing the drums once a year at the Tsuzuriko Shrine annual festival on July 14th and 15th. Prayers are offered for rain, bountiful harvests and chasing away insects. The sight of several people advancing through the village beating very large drums, each up to 3.8 meters in diameter, while standing on top of them is a sight to behold. At the annual festival of Tsuzureko Shrine, performances such as lion dances and yakko dances are offered. The Tsuzureko district has historically suffered from poor access to agricultural water relative to its vast farmland, and drum ceremonies have long been performed as rain-calling rituals. The drums used when praying for a good harvest gradually grew in size over the years and became very large. In 1989, the Guinness Book of Records recognized one of those giant drums, which had a diameter of 3.71 meters, as the world's largest Japanese drum made from a single cow hide.
