Decorated with colorful costumes and ornaments made by local residents, the sacred poles are simply works of art.300余年の歴史と伝統を誇る横手の豪華絢爛『梵天』旭岡山神社梵天奉納祭はおおよそ300年の歴史と伝統を誇る横手の小正月行事。梵天（ぼんでん)とは、幣束（へいそく、神祭用具のひとつ）のことで、五穀豊穣、家内安全、商売繁盛など様々な願いを込めて、毎年2月17日に旭岡山神社に奉納する。県内各所で梵天行事が行なわれているが、横手の梵天は他に類を見ないほどの大きさ、優美さ、そして豪華さが特徴。竿の長さは、4.3ｍ(1丈4尺5寸)、その先に直径90㎝(3尺)の円筒形の竹かごを取り付け、色鮮やかな布等の「さがり」を垂らし、しめ縄や紙垂、鉢巻を取り付け、さらに干支、人形等の意匠をこらした頭飾りをのせる。頭飾りを取り付けると、その大きさは5ｍを優に超え、重さは30㎏以上にもなる。毎年2月16日には梵天の出来栄えを競って賑わう「ぼんてんコンクール」が横手市役所で行われ、翌日の17日には勇壮に旭岡山神社に奉納される。17日、梵天は小若(と呼ばれる「子ども梵天」) 10数本や恵比寿俵を加え40ほどの町内・団体が、横手市役所を出発し2時間かけて旭岡山神社まで練り歩く。クライマックスは山門から1㎞に及ぶ急な参道を駆け上がり奉納する横手若衆とそれを阻もうとする他の町内・団体が激しく押し合いが行なわれ、熱気と迫力は最高潮に達する。梵天が終わると雪国横手に春がくると言われている。The magnificent Bonden sacred poles of Yokote boast over 300 years of history and tradition.The Asahiokayama Shrine Bonden sacred poles dedication festival is an event to mark the Little New Year (one week before the Lunar New Year). It has a history and tradition of approximately 300 years in Yokote. Bonden are decorated wands or poles used in Shinto rituals and are offered to Asahiokayama Shrine each year on February 17th with various requests to the gods, such as prayers for harvests to be abundant, families to be safe and businesses to prosperous. Sacred pole events are held in various places in the prefecture, but Yokote's sacred poles are unparalleled in size, elegance, and splendor. These poles are 4.3 m in length, to the end of which is attached a cylindrical bamboo basket 90 cm in diameter, from which hang offerings of brightly colored cloth, sacred ropes, zigzag-shaped paper streamers, and headband and a large crowning ornament decorated with designs of the Chinese zodiac and dolls. When the crowning ornaments are installed, the size of the poles can exceed 5 meters and weigh more than 30 kg. Each year on February 16, a Bonden Contest is held at Yokote City Hall, where people compete for the best sacred poles. The following day, the poles are dedicated in a lively ceremony to the Asahiokayama Shrine. On the 17th, the sacred poles, including a dozen or so children's sacred poles and decorated Ebisu rice bales, are carried by around 40 local communities and groups, who depart Yokote City Hall and spend two hours parading to Asahiokayama Shrine. The climax of the event sees the young men of Yokote rush up the steep one-kilometer approach from the mountain gate to make offerings at the shrine, while other local communities and groups try to stop them. This pushing and shoving builds to an exciting and energetic crescendo.
