Pray to the heavens with the flames!A rare festival that carries on the traditions of Little New Year (a festival to celebrate the first full moon of the year)This Little New Year event takes place over five days and combines prayers for a good harvest, safety, prosperity, exorcisms to ward off bad harvests and disasters, and fortune telling to predict the year’s fortunes. The festival begins with “tenpitsu” writing, in which people write their wishes on five-colored strips of paper, and on the second day, a snow chamber called Torioigoya appears, where the Kamakura god is enshrined. On the final day, “bamboo beating” is performed amid the rising flames of the burning tenpitsu for the festival to reach its climax.Giant samurai and “naked” figures atop giant floats - Magnificent floats and portable shrines wind through the port city -This annual festival is held at Tsuchizaki Shinmeisha, which houses the guardian of Tsuchizaki, port area of Akita City. Large samurai and “naked” figures sit atop giant floats. Each float holds 2 or 3 figures in displays of battles and other historical events. Visitors will be charmed by these figures, made by a doll shop established some 140 years ago. On the back of the floats are situated panels, called “mikaeshi,” showing social scenes, as well as backward-facing satirical figures. Three matches take place, of which the final one, taking place across burning Matsunio decoration, is the highlight.7月21日の20時からは戻り曳山を運行。「あいや節」が演奏される中、昼にも増して威勢よく曳かれ、揺れる提灯に哀愁が漂う。The floats are launched for the return trip at around 8 pm on July 21st.
