A holy tug-of-war, boasting a history of over 500 years.Two huge ropes (male and female) weighing roughly 10 tons each are pulled in this ritual dedicated to the god that protects the market. On the brutally cold night of February 10, the town is divided into the upper town “Futsuka Town” and the lower town “Itsuka Town” as the ropes are pulled. The sight of the participants pulling the ropes with all their might to the lanterns swaying left and right and shouts of “joyasano!” is soul-stirring. Wins and losses reveal the fortune for the year as the rice increases in value if the upper town wins and a bountiful harvest can be enjoyed if the lower town wins.Children offer you amazake and rice cakes in a fairytalelike shrine made of snow.A roughly 450-year-old lunar New Year event of Yokote City, which has some of the largest amounts of snowfall in Akita Prefecture. Mounds of snow that are hollowed out and turned into igloos will be lined next to each other and lit up on the evenings of February 15 and 16. Feel nice and warm as you enter a snow hut that a child beckons you into. After offering money to the god of water enshrined at the front, you can enjoy a conversation while drinkingamazake and eating rice cakes.
