Please check the latest information before planning your visit.Connecting the 1,400-year history of the Japanese lute to the futureThe “biwa”, or Japanese lute, is a stringed instrument introduced in Japan around 550 AD via the Silk Road. It has evolved over a long period of time in a uniquely Japanese way, and has come to be associated with historical stories. The Satsuma-style biwa, from the late Muromachi period, has survived to the present day, incorporating the trends of each era. In particular, the "Tsuruta School", which emerged in the Showa era, greatly developed elements that had not previously existed with the Satsuma-style biwa. It became possible to play the instrument in ensembles with other instruments, and the biwa began to be highly valued and noticed at home as well as abroad. Kahori Kumada is a biwa player from the above-mentioned Tsuruta school. In college, she studied under Yukio Tanaka from the Tsuruta school, and she became the youngest Japanese winner at the 46th Japan Biwa Music Contest in 2009. Besides classical music, she is also involved in a variety of activities that break new ground, writing for television, radio and video games, as well as her own pieces.
