When his health improved, he joined the shrine’s mikoshi (portable shrine) procession, which is said to have marked the beginning of the festival. From the merchant quarter, floats were paraded through the town, accompanied by the lively music of Toyoma Bayashi and Kiyari Ondo. The festival music includes seven distinct pieces, performed at different moments—when the floats begin their procession, while they pause, and as they move through the streets. The floats, built in the distinctive “Toyoma style,” are adorned with papier-mâché figures depicting famous Kabuki and Noh scenes, as well as animals, trees, flowers, rocks, and natural motifs.
