The dance is believed to have first arisen in the Nagai district of what was formerly Monou Town in Monou County, and is said to have been introduced to the Terasaki district in the early Showa period. Men and women wearing long underwear, headscarves, and holding fans adorned with the rising sun dance and leap to musical accompaniment. The main event of the Monou Fureai Festival is the Haneko Odori Parade, which has around 1000 performers dancing dynamically and wildly. Fireworks also add color to the festival. The Terasaki Haneko Odori Preservation Society plays a prominent role in the parade, handing down traditions as well as contributing to the revitalization of the city by promoting regional exchanges.
