It’s a must-see! The dancers move with four-meter banners on their backs in this lively deer danceIn 1827, a man named Kumagai Rinzo of Kamiyatsuse, a village next to Waseya (present-day Kesennuma City), was taught by Kizaemon, master of the deer dance of Ohara (present Yamaguchi, Daito-cho, Ichinoseki-shi), Iwate Prefecture, eventually passing it on to the people of Waseya in 1882. This is believed to be the beginning of this particular deer dance. The deer dances belong to the category of the Furyu school of the shishimai lion dance. While they originated as a dance to honor the deer, they subsequently evolved into a ritual to honor one’s ancestors as well as to award off disease. The Waseya deer dance is also offered at the annual sweet sake Jizo (Ksitigarbha) Bodhisattva ritual to make offerings to infants who died of hunger and other cause. The Waseya deer dance is unusual in that it has a “jester”, called the “ghost monk,” woven throughout the story from beginning to end, and is performed by eight deer dances, dancing with a four-meter banner on their backs. Dance programs include “Hotoke Ogami” (praying to Buddha), which is a memorial dance dedicated to the spirits, as well as “Mejikakurui” (the crazed doe) and “Katsuo Odori” (the bonito dance), which are performed as prayers for a bountiful harvest and a good catch of fish. Intense efforts at preservation and perpetuation of these dances are being made to ensure that the excitement of these dances never fades away. At present, junior high and high school students who learned the dances at local elementary schools join these performances. *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
