At present, the dance is part of temple and shrine festivities in these various communities. The dancers consist of the Yanjūrō (the kojoyaku master of ceremonies), the suzufuri performers, and about eight saotome girls dressed in colorful furisode kimono and wearing flower hats. They perform a beautifully choreographed dance that depicts the rice-planting process to the accompaniment of flutes, drums, and other instruments. The pattern of turnips found on the back of the yanjuro’s costume originates from rice-planting dances of the castle town of Sendai, illustrating its long history. Currently, the yanjuro and saotome (rice-planting girls) are played primarily by elementary school students. Rice-planting dances in Akiu are known for their sophistication and highly ritualized movements, which are derived from actual rice-planting. The dances, performed in between rice-planting dances, are also imbued with elements of kabuki dancing, including distinctive hand movements. In the old days, local residents of one village and those of neighboring villages invited each other to their rice-planting dances. Once the dance heats up, the audience begins to call out phrases of appreciation to the dancers, and in turn, representatives of the different groups call out responses.
