The dance is based on a legend from the ancient Chinese book “Ekikyo,” which says, “Clouds follow dragons, and winds follow tigers.” It is said that the origin of the festival dates back to the dedication of a tiger dance at the Hatsuuma Festival of the Tagawa Inari Shrine in order to temper the wind by borrowing the tiger's authority. The festival is said to have started under the rule of the Osaki clan about 650 years ago. It later expanded in content and scale as it became an uplifting festival for merchants to prosper and prevent accidents related to fire. Today, tigers are played by local elementary and junior high school students, who parade through the shopping district with decorated floats and visit each house in the district, performing in its garden or on its doorstep. The highlight of the performance is the dance on the high roof of the shopping street, which is magnificent as it moves in the wind. The tiger dance has become a deeply ingrained symbol of the town, with a stone statue erected in front of the town hall and the image used on manholes and corporate signboards.
