The Haguro school of kagura consists of a dancer, two drummers, and a flutist. The dance is characterized by both slow and graceful dances, as well as powerful and lively scenes, and still retains the old-fashioned dance steps called “henbai,” foot stomping called “tora,” and finger marking. The content of the performance is taken from mythology, including the origins of the universe and the earth, and the birth and activities of the gods. When the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami devastated the area, most of the kagura tools were lost, and the group’s very survival was in jeopardy.
