Protected by dances and musical accompaniment such as tiger dances, and shaded by lanterns, tiger heads shake and bells ring to see off the return of the sacred body.曳き船まつりと、最終日に行われる尾崎神社と日本製鉄山神社それぞれの御神輿を先頭に虎舞、神楽、鹿踊り、手踊りなどが目抜き通りを渡御する合同祭の総称で、なかでも曳き船まつりは3百数十年続けられる華やかな海上パレードで、東北では最も古い船の祭事だ。祭りの盛立て役は、「虎は１日に千里行って千里帰る」ということわざから将士の士気を高め、漁師の安全を託して踊られ始めたという虎舞で、とりわけご神体を囲み湾内を３周する船上での浜っこ気質溢れた踊りは、神楽や七福神なども賑やかに色とりどりの大漁旗や吹流しをなびかせる海上パレードとあいまってまさに圧巻。古来より神々を尊崇し、自然に感謝しながら生きることを喜び合ってきた営みとその素晴らしさを改めて感じる祭りである。虎舞は、開業や結婚などの祝事だけでなく鎮魂のためにも踊られ、釜石をはじめ三陸地域には欠かすことのできない郷土芸能である。Dances Passed Down Overcoming the DisasterThe Kamaishi Festival is the generic name of two festivals: the Hikifune Matsuri, held on the second day of the festival, in which the deity of the Ozaki Shrine is brought across the sea from the Okumiya Shrine across the sea, and the joint festival held on the final day, in which the portable shrines of the Ozaki Shrine and the Nihon Seitetsusan Shrine are led across the main street by tiger dances, Kagura music, deer dances, hand dances and other performances. The Hikibune Matsuri is the oldest boat festival in Tohoku, and has been held for 300 years and a few decades. The festival's main attraction is the tiger dance, which was first performed to raise the spirits of the warriors and ensure the safety of the fishermen, based on the proverb, “A tiger travels 1,000 ri (4,000 km) a day and returns 1,000 ri (4,000 km) a day. ”The dance, full of the lively spirit of seaside people, is performed onboard a boat that makes three rounds around the sacred body, is a highlight of the festival, especially when accompanied by a lively parade on the sea of Kagura and the seven gods of good fortune, colorful fishing flags, and streamers.
