It’s a sight to see! The dynamic “Hyakushikadaigunbu” (Hundred Deer Dance) of the Esashi area of Oshu city belongs to a class of deer dances accompanied by drums. It is primarily found everywhere from southern Iwate Prefecture to northern Miyagi Prefecture (formerly the Sendai domain). The dancers wear a small, high-pitched drum around their waists, and a deer head carved in wood with deer horns and horsehair, called a “zai,” on their heads. They also carry a three-meter piece of split bamboo, to which is attached shoji paper to create a banner like the wands used in Shinto ceremonies. This dance is normally performed by eight dancers wearing black banners emblazoned with the Date Clan (lords of the Sendai Domain) Kuyo and Takenisuzume Crests, beating the drums and singing as they go along. There are two broad lineages of this type of dance: Gyozan and Kanatsu. There are various theories to how the deer dances originated, including as Buddhist invocation dances, or as part of their spiritual practice of ancient ascetics, but the most broadly accepted theory is that the dances were intended to comfort the resentful souls of the dead, and to honor the spirits of the ancestors. Even today, during the Obon festival, the dance is performed as part of ceremonies to make offerings to the ancestors and drive away evil spirits, and in the fall as part of prayers for a bountiful harvest. In 1985, the Esashi Deer Dance Preservation Society (14 organizations) created the Hundred Deer Dance, integrating various lineages of the dance in one, to commemorate the opening of the Mizusawa-Esashi Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen. It was exhibited at the Michinoku Urabon Festival, a summer festival of Esashi. For this event, approximately 100 dancers perform this dynamic dance accompanied by drumming—in a spectacular sight that literally takes viewers’ breath away. Visitors can also enjoy local performances along shopping streets, lantern-floating, and fireworks. The dancers are active nation-wide, participating in events such as the Esashi Jinku Festival, giving public performances around Japan, taking part in celebratory parades, and more. The idea is to preserve these arts for future generations.
