The name “Chagu Chagu” is said to come from the sound of the bells that jingle with every step the horses take. The festival is held annually on the second Saturday of June. Since the Nara period, the Iwate region has been well-known for horse breeding. Traditionally, people and horses lived together under one roof in distinctive “Nanbu Magariya” houses, a unique architectural style of the region. The origin of Chagu Chagu Umakko is believed to be the Sozen-moude, a pilgrimage to shrines such as Sozen Shrine to pray for the health and well-being of horses that worked hard in the fields. It is said that during these Sozen-moude pilgrimages, it became popular to lead horses dressed in Konida Shozoku—the decorative attire originally used for packhorses that carried luggage in the grand processions of feudal lords (sankin-kotai) to Edo—giving rise to the prototype of the Chagu Chagu Umakko costumes. The way these horse costumes are made differs from household to household and has been carefully passed down through generations.
