The Hitaka Fire Prevention Festival, which boasts a history of more than 300 years, is valuable not only as it represents a characteristic of local festivals called “fire prevention,” but also because it continues the tradition of parading performing arts on yatai floats. Hayashi-yatai, decorated by each town group, parade through the streets to the sound of an old-fashioned musical piece. The excitement of the festival reaches its climax at night during the main festival when the floats of each town group compete with each other to perform splendid “o-hayashis” under the lights of bonbori lanterns.
