The Ennen (dance performed at temples after the puja) dedicated to the Matarajin-sai, a “spring ritual” held on January 20 in the snow-covered Jogyodo, is one of the few precious traditional performing arts that remain today. The festival begins on January 14, and on the 20th, the day of the conclusion of the Matarajinsai, it is called Hatsukayasai (night festival). Following the meal-offering ceremony, the traditional Jogyozanmai ritual is performed. Men, women, and children of all ages, who have reached the age of misfortune, parade to Jogyodo with torches at the head of the procession to leave offerings such as radishes and Chinese cabbage for the treasure and pray for good health and safety in their homes.
