A tradition to mark the end of rice planting, where villagers pray for abundant crops with straw dolls and banners in handThe Mushi Okuri ceremony takes place in southern Aomori around June 24th of the lunar calendar, after rice planting is completed. A parade is held through the village amid the sound of taiko drums and flutes, with villagers holding a pair of male and female straw dolls and banners with slogans such as “Begone evil insects” and “Bountiful harvest.” Afterwards, the dolls and banners are sent to the edge of the village. Each village has its own unique traditions, and each Mushi Okuri has its own unique charm.
