Every year on August 15-16, citizens and tourists from inside and outside of the prefecture dance until late at night. The origin of the word “yosare” is “stop working and have fun” when the harvest is good and “leave this world” when the harvest is bad. Kuroishi Yosare consists of three dances: Mawari Odori, Kumiodori, and Nagashi Odori. The main Nagashi Odori is performed by as many as 2,000 dancers parading through the city every day, and Mawari Odori, an occasional circular dance that involves the audience, is a wild sight to see. Kumiodori is a lively Tsugaru folk song hand dance performed by dance troupes from nearby villages with shamisen, drums, and singing.
