The Tachi-neputa floats used in prayers for good healthGoshogawara’s Tachi-neputa is one of Aomori Prefecture’s representative summer festivals, or “Neputa“. The distinctive feature of this festival is the “standing” doll lanterns. This testifies that the wealthy merchants and farmers of Goshogawara used to compete about the size of their lanterns to show off their power. The dignified neputa figures of warriors from history, such as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Kabuki, are a must-see. The Neputa Festival is said to be a variation of the water lantern ritual held during the Star Festival of the old Japanese calendar. It is held at various locations around Aomori Prefecture in August, but the highlight of the Tachi-neputa Festival at Goshogawara City is particularly outstanding size. Spectators are overwhelmed by their size exceeding 20 meters in height, which is equivalent to a seven-story-tall building. Their bright colors and dynamic designs are also impressive. They weigh nearly 20 tons and are hauled by 70 young people. Over ten small and medium-sized neputa floats and three tachi-neputa floats appear each year.
