This Shugen Noh was created by incorporating sarugaku, dengaku, ennen, and other forms of entertainment that were popular in the Middle Ages, and is said to have been transmitted by shugenja throughout the country. The Noh dances of Shimokita are also thought to have been brought by shugenja who worked at Mount Osorezan, and later spread to various villages, where they have been handed down to the present day as an integral part of local life. During the first three days of the New Year and koshogatsu (generally on January 15), about 10 performances are performed until late at night in various community halls.
