The gods want to smear mud on people as they try to run away! A unique festival of Miyako Island held in prayers for good health.Three costumed gods appear in the Shimajiri district of Miyako Island at the beginning of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar. The masked “Paantus” are entirely covered with sacred mud from a well called the “Nmariga” and wrapped with Derris vines. They drive away evil and bring good luck by smearing mud on everyone as they try to run away. In the Ueno Nobaru district, there is a “Paantu of Nobaru (Sati Parai)” event with a lively procession, which consists of a masked elementary school student, a drum, a giant triton, and women, going through the village as evil is warded off on the last day of the ox of the twelfth month in the lunar calendar.A unique village dance that is rare even in Okinawa Prefecture! The recital that reveals the rehearsals is a must-see.The Ie Island Village Dance is a unique performing art that cannot be found in other regions of Okinawa Prefecture. In addition to dances formed on Ie Island and dances that were passed down from the main island of Okinawa, it incorporates Yamato-style dances that were learned by young people from Ie Island on the mainland from the 17th to 19th centuries. It has many “Niseudui” dance elements performed by youths and is characterized by its being performed by two to four people and lasting only a minute, which is unseen in other regions. It is a traditional performing art that is deeply rooted in daily life in that the village dance is learned in school and performed at celebratory feasts.Date:Shimajiri district: 2 nights in early September of the lunar calendar, Ueno Nobaru district: Last Ox Day of December of the lunar calendarPlace:Various locations in the Shimajiri and Ueno Nobaru districtsCar: About 30 min. from Miyakojima Airport (Shimajiri district)Shimajiri Community Association and Nobaru Tribal AssociationDates: Every year in early-NovemberPlace:Ie Village Agricultural Environment Improvement Center HallShip/Car: About 4 min. by car from Ie Port after a roughly 30-minute ferry ride from Motobu PortIe Village Board of Education写真提供:宮古島市教育委員会写真提供:宮古島市教育委員会写真提供:宮古島市教育委員会写真提供:宮古島市教育委員会開催日:毎年、島尻地区:旧暦9月上旬の2晩、上野野原地区:旧暦12月最後の丑の日場所:島尻地区・上野野原地区の各所車:「宮古島空港」より車で約30分(島尻地区)島尻自治会・野原部落会開催日:毎年11月上旬場所:伊江村農村環境改善センターホール船・車:「本部港」よりフェリーで約30分、「伊江港」で 下船して車で約4分伊江村教育委員会 0980-49-2334悲鳴と笑い声を上げながら逃げる人々に、泥を塗るパーントゥ。観光客・子ども・車・家などにも容赦なく塗りたくる。The Paantu smearing mud on people as they scream and laugh while running away.
