It is mostly performed by local youths from each region, who dance and parade through their communities. Of the various theories about the origin of Eisa, one of the prevailing ones is that between 1603 and 1606, a Jodo monk named Taichu Shonin, who was acquainted with the king of Ryukyu at the time, introduced a Buddist memorial dance while chanting Buddhist scriptures, which evolved into Eisa. Though some of the dances are performed empty-handed and without drums, the majority is performed mainly with large taiko drums, smaller shime-daiko drums, and Paranku drums (a small handheld drum with a single drumhead). The large drum plays the dynamic leading role and captures the sound of the three-stringed sanshin with its heavy sound, while the shime-daiko drum and paranku drum performers dance with boldness and finesse, with the whole group dancing in perfect unison. It is followed by men and women performing empty-handed dances. An accompanist leads the tempo of the dancers with a three-stringed sanshin and singing. There are lively musical accompaniments between the Eisa performances, such as the chants of "Ilya saasa, hai iyaa".
