It is a simple dance of singing and dancing to the rhythm of taiko drums alone, but it is full of soul-stirring enthusiasm and has been nurtured on the islands. The tempo is slow at first, but gradually increases in speed and excitement with the sound of the Hato (finger whistle). The tempo gradually increases in speed, which is called “Arashage,” which gave rise to the name “Arashage-kai. It was formed in 2011 and led by the late Shunzo Tsukiji, the number one minyo singer in Japan. The group consists of members ranging in age from 12 to 85, and while the “August Dance” is basically performed in each village on Amami Oshima, the “Arashage-kai” is performed in the town of Naze.
