The islanders who lived through these times have continued to sing their songs, interweaving their way of life, lessons learned, and feelings into the lyrics and melodies. In the Amami Islands, the songs of the islands and villages where they were born and raised are called “shima-uta” (island songs), and a variety of these songs continue to be sung and loved. The beautiful back vocals that resonates in the heart as well as the melody of the shamisen tinged with melancholy help create the unique charm that emanate from shima-uta.
