The festival is thought to have begun in 720 when the imperial army defeated the Hayato people of southern Kyushu, who were resisting the imperial court. Since there were so many Hayato killed in battle, a memorial service (hojoe, a religious ceremony to warn people against killing) was held to commemorate their dead. It also celebrates bountiful harvest. Yagoro-don himself was believed to be either the leader of the Hayato or Takenouchi no Sukune on the Imperial Court side, but his true identity is not clear. The Yagoro-don of Iwagawa Hachiman Shrine is a giant figure with a ferocious appearance, wearing a kimono and hakama trousers dyed with the ex-tract of red plum wood on his 4.85-meter bamboo basket body, large and small swords at his waist, and carrying a 3.81-meter long spear. He is awakened at 1:00 a.m. on November 3 by the sound of drums and “Yagoro-don, wake up”. He is then pulled by a rope to wake up his huge body. The procession leaves the shrine in the afternoon and parades through the city for about three hours in a majestic procession down to the beach.
