It features a bizarre, masked god called Mendon, who appears during the dance. Mendon is registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The origin of this dance is unclear, but it is believed that in 1598, during Lord Yoshihiro Shimazu's invasion of Korea, three warriors from Io Island who were following Lord Shimazu helped him in time of need on the battlefield and were rewarded for their war heroism. This dance was then offered as a triumphal celebration of their return. The Io Island Hassaku Taiko Dance takes place at Kumano Shrine for two days each year in the eighth month of the lunar calendar. A performer with a gong sings, and dancers with banners on their backs carrying drums in their arms dance energetically to unique verses. As the dance reaches its climax, a Mendon (god of exorcism and cleansing rituals) wearing a bizarre mask appears and chases onlookers to a sacred tree called a subben tree to exorcise demons.
