An authentic recreation of ancient Joruri Theater from around 300 years ago!A puppet show skillfully brought to life by a single puppeteer.“Bunyabushi” is traditional Japanese puppet theater that carries on to this day in Yamanokuchi in the city of Miyakonojo, Miyazaki Prefecture. It is an ancient form of ballad drama with a history of about 300 years. A distinctive feature of this performance is the inclusion of a shamisen (Japanese musical instrument) during pauses in the narration, and the puppets made at the time are still treasured and passed down to this day, supporting the performance. These puppets are operated using a technique called “hitotsukai” (one-man operation). By putting both hands behind the doll’s back, moving its head and left hand with their left hand and its right hand with their right hand, it appears as if the doll has emotions.
