Dancers carry a wide variety of tools, including sacred staffs, bows and arrows, and swords. Some of the sacred masks have been handed down in each region for generations.穣を願う伝統の村祭りである。毎年11月から翌年2月にかけて、町内10余の集落で、氏神様を神楽宿と呼ばれる民家や公民館にお招きし、夜を徹して三十三番の神楽を奉納する。高千穂の神楽は、平安末期から鎌倉時代には始まったと考えられ、江戸時代後期までは神職を中心に伝承されてきたが、その後里人にも伝承され、現在の形になった。神楽三十三番は面を掛ける神楽が十三番ほどで、願神楽の素面(すおもて)舞が大半である。中でも、三番「神降し」から五番「杉登」までは「式三番」といわれ、神社祭典でも必ず舞われる最も重要な舞いである。豊作を祈る舞、子孫繁栄を願う舞等が続き、夜明け頃に行われる天岩戸神話を題材とした岩戸五番が終盤の山場となる。Traditional Shinto ritual performances with dancing throughout the nightNight Kagura is a traditional village festival created to give thanks for the autumn harvest and offer prayers for a good harvest the following year. It has been passed down in Takachiho Town, the birthplace of Shinto mythology. Every year from November to February of the following year, over 10 communities in the town invite their guardian deities to private homes and community centers known as Kagura Yado, where they perform 33 Kagura dances throughout the night. The kagura tradition in Takachiho is thought to have begun in the late Heian to Kamakura periods and handed down mainly by priests until the late Edo period (1603-1868), after which it was handed down to villagers and took its present form. Masks are worn in about 13 of the 33 kagura performances. Most of Kagura dances are performed without masks. The most important ones among them, from number three, Kamioroshi, to number five, Suginobori, are called Shiki-sanban, and are always performed at shrine festivals.
