One of the fun things at the festival is learning about the subtle differences in the dances and music passed down by each preservation group. Performed under the patronage of the lord of the Matsumae Clan, continuing a 350-year traditionIt is said that fire kyogen [Noh comedy] and Shinto priest dances were performed in the southern part of Hokkaido even before the establishment of the Matsumae clan. In 1764, during the reign of the 10th clan head of the Matsumae family, Norihiro Matsumae, the performances of okagura [Shinto music and dance] that had been performed at shrines in the Matsumae area for centuries were unified, and priests were gathered from the domain to Matsumae Castle for training. This marked the beginning of Jonai [within the castle] Kagura, the model for the current performances of Matsumae Kagura. From then on, Matsumae Kagura was held every other year within the castle, praying for the safety of the domain and bountiful harvest, and was strictly observed until the abolition of the domain in the 4th year of Meiji [1871]. Rather than being performed by a kagura master or other specialist, the dignified and elegant art form that has been passed down from generation to generation is performed by the priests at regular festivals. When the protection of the Matsumae feudal lord was lost due to the abolition of the domain, the families that had passed down the okagura began to deepen their ties with shrine parishioners and began to preserve and carry on Matsumae Kagura. People migrated to various parts of Hokkaido in search of abundant fishing resources, and as a result, Matsumae Kagura spread throughout the prefecture, especially in the Oshima Shiribeshi region. Today, Matsumae Kagura consists of 33 Shinto rituals, including Soshinpai, Kagurasome, Chinkama Yutateshiki (12 rituals), and Bugaku (21 rituals). The Matsumae Kagura Hokkaido Union Preservation Society, consisting of preservation groups from four regions (Matsumae, Otaru, Fukushima, and Hakodate), is striving to preserve and pass on the tradition. Town of Matsumae in Hokkaido, as well as the Sea of Japan coastal areas and the southern region of Hokkaido, Hokkaidoここが見どころ !272700※掲載されている情報は、令和7(2025)年12月末現在の情報であり、お出かけの際には、事前に最新情報をご確認下さい。 *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
