A majestic furyu (ritual) dance performed by dancers dressed as warriors of the Sengoku (Warring States) period and holding bows, spears, guns, and other weapons in their handsThe Gokase Wild Dance, which has a history going back more than 400 years, is ritualistically performed every year in late September at the Chunobori Shrine and Sakamoto Castle ruins. “Kakare! (To arms!)” shout the warriors as they form ranks, armed with bows, spears, and matchlock guns. The dancers perform different dances specific to their positions, including new recruits and commanders. Before long, the dancers break ranks to form a circle, and the atmosphere shifts. They continue with quiet, elegant dances, including the Mikado no Tei and Goshoden Odori. The heroic rank-and-file formation combines with the elegant circular formation to envelope the event site in a truly majestic atmosphere.Dancing all night in one of Japan’s three most secluded regions! Unique yokagura (nighttime kagura dances) passed down in 26 areasShiiba Village, which is considered one of Japan’s three most secluded regions, is divided into 26 areas, each of which is home to kagura dancing that features completely different movements, musical accompaniment, and clothing. These dances are collectively called Shiiba Kagura. Kagura dances are performed on stages called mikoya, which have canopies called kumo hanging from the ceiling. In many areas, the dancers perform all night. Offerings include boar, deer, and other meat; and grains that include Japanese millet, foxtail millet, and soybeans are scattered during the ceremony, all of which reflects the hunting, slash-and-burn agriculture, and other traditional practices of the village. Some of the kagura dances and chants concerning the origins of torimono (sacred objects) have been passed down for hundreds of years.Date:Every year on the last Sunday in SeptemberPlace:Chunobori Shrine, Sakamoto Castle ruinsCar: About 30 minutes by car from the Hinokage-Fukasumi I.C., which is on the Kyushu Chūō Expressway (Sakamoto Castle ruins)Gokase Tourism AssociationDate:Every year from mid-November until late DecemberPlace:Shiiba Village areaCar: About 60 minutes by car from the Yamato Tsujunkyo I.C., which is on the Kyushu Expressway (Shiiba Itsukushima Shrine)Shiiba Folk Performing Arts Museum開催日:毎年9月の最終日曜日場所:中登神社・坂本城址車:九州中央自動車道「日之影深角I.C.」 The Ara Odori is said to have been passed down by the Senko-ji Temple, and, because monkeys were apparently kept as pets at the temple, one dancer wears a monkey mask. The members of the audience cheer for the kagura by singing the Seri Song both within and outside the dancing area. It is also customary in the area to bring two to three sho (3.6 to 5.4 liter) of shochu as an offering or some other gift. *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
