Nagata Hyottoko DanceThe Nagata Hyottoko Dance is a folk performing art that has been handed down in the Shiomi Nagata area of Hyuga City since the Meiji period. It was invented by Dr. Kimiyuki Tachibana, a local ophthalmologist, and has been passed down to the present day by the Tachibana Hyottoko Odori Preservation Society. The dance is performed on various occasions to celebrate a good harvest and to wish for prosperous business. The Hyottoko Summer Festival, which started in 1984 with the theme of “Hyottoko Dance” to revitalize the local community, pass on traditional culture, and promote tourism, is held annually in August. The number of dancers has gradually increased from less than 500 in the beginning to more than 2,000 all over the country. Dancers wear masks of “Hyottoko,” “Okame,” and “Kitsune,” red kimono with white sashes, and mameshibori tenugui handkerchiefs. The masks, with their various facial expressions, are funny and attract the audience.
