A silent puppet dances and powerful sumo wrestleThis Shinto ritual is performed once every three years, and features dances and sumo wrestling performed by wooden puppets called kugutsu. First of all, a dancing puppet with arms moving up and down performs to the accompaniment of flutes and drums. Next, sumo dolls with movable arms and legs appear from the east and west to engage in a match. Gion-sama, the yokozuna of the east, measures approximately 65 cm, while Sumiyoshi-sama, the yokozuna of the west, measures approximately 33 cm. The silence of the dance suddenly changes, and the sound of wood clashing echoes throughout the room, igniting a heated battle. 東西対抗の相撲では、白星を挙げた相撲人形がユーモラスな動きを見せ、会場を盛り上げる。その愛嬌たっぷりの姿に、笑いや歓声が沸き起こる。The East vs. West sumo match, sees the winning sumo puppet move comically, livening up the atmosphere at the venue.
