It features puppets skillfully manipulated by three puppeteers in harmony with Joruri narration in the Gidayu-bushi style and the sound of shamisen music. Through this, a world of loyalty, duty, and human emotions unique to Ningyo Joruri unfolds on stage. It is said that Seiwa Bunraku was introduced to the Seiwa district in the late Edo period by a traveling Ningyo Joruri troupe. Local villagers who loved Joruri learned the art and began performing it as offerings during spring prayers and autumn festivals. Since then, performances have been offered on special stages set up at shrines and in fields, expressing wishes for bountiful harvests and gratitude for peaceful daily life. Although it once declined after the late Meiji period, it was revived on the occasion of Emperor Showa’s enthronement. The Seiwa Bunraku Puppet Theater Preservation Society was then established, and performances were held throughout Kumamoto Prefecture. In this way, Seiwa Bunraku, handed down in a small farming village, has been cherished by many people. Today, about 200 performances are held every year at the dedicated Ningyo Joruri theater “Seiwa Bunraku Hall”, located at the roadside station in Yamato Town.
