Skilled craftsmen make them using only Japanese paper and glue, without any wood or nails.が見られる。起源はその昔、景行天皇のご巡幸を里人がたいまつを持って迎えたことによるとされ、室町時代頃から、和紙とのりだけで作られた伝統工芸品「山鹿灯籠」を奉納するようになったと言われている。祭りのハイライトはイベントの最終日１６日に行われる「千人灯籠踊り」。千人の女性が頭に金灯籠を載せ、幾重にも輪を描いて舞う姿は、幻想的な美しさである。祭りの期間中町内に飾られた灯籠を神社に奉納する「上がり燈籠」で祭りは幕が下ろされる。みこしを担いだ勇壮な男衆の掛け声は深夜におよび、「夜明かし祭り」と呼ばれる所以となっている。 徳永 正弘氏：平成5年度地域伝統芸能大賞支援賞受賞Women holding lanterns on their heads depict the art of light handed down from ancient timesThe Yamaga Lantern Festival is one of Kyushu’s representative summer festivals, where the lights floating in the evening are fantastic. The festival features elegant lantern dances performed throughout the town. The origin of the festival is said to date back to the time when the villagers welcomed Emperor Keiko’s visit with torches. It is said that in the Muromachi period (1333-1573), people began to dedicate “Yamaga Lantern,” a traditional handicraft made of only Japanese paper and glue. The highlight of the festival is the “Sen-nin Toro Odori” (Thousand Women’s Lantern Dance) held on the 16th, the last day of the event. The sight of 1,000 women dancing with golden lanterns on their heads in a multi-layered circle is magnificent. The festival ends with “Agari Toro”, in which lanterns displayed in the town during the festival are dedicated to the shrine.
