The port of Ushibuka, with its intricate inlet, has long been known as an excellent natural harbor. It served as a bustling stopover for ships traveling between Osaka and Kagoshima, either waiting for favorable winds or seeking shelter from approaching storms. The song was originally sung by those who anxiously awaited the progress of sailing boats departing with the south wind. Over time, Haiya-bushi became a form of entertainment for people waiting at the harbor. With its cheerful and light-hearted rhythm, characteristic of tropical regions, the song reflects the joy and vibrant spirit of the port town. The Ushibuka Haiya Festival is a major event that blends the roots of Haiya-style folk songs—widely known throughout Japan—with vibrant dancing. One of the festival’s highlights is Haiya Souodori, where around 3,000 dancers parade through the streets of central Ushibuka. The choreography is inspired by the movements of fishermen, such as pulling in nets and rowing, creating a powerful and captivating performance.
