A gorgeous festival with a history of about 400 yearsNagasaki Kunchi is an annual autumn festival at Suwa Shrine, the local deity of Nagasaki, held on the 7th, 8th, and 9th of October. The festival began in the Kan'ei era and has a history of about 400 years. At four dance venues (Suwa Shrine, Otabisho, Yasaka Shrine, and Chuo Park), the five to seven “Odori-machi” in charge on a particular year perform an exotic and dynamic dance offering. There are various types of performances such as Honodori, Ryuodori, Whale Blowing, Kawabune, Gozabune, Tojinbune, and Taikoyama, which all have an important significance in conveying Nagasaki's unique cultural traditions. In the center of the city, “Niwa Sakimawari” is also held to offer the dance to government offices, stores, and houses. On October 7, three portable shrines are accompanied by a procession of approximately 1,000 people in an “Okudari,” and a “Kasaboko parade” will be held, in which Kasaboko floats weighing more than 100 kg will take part in a powerful parade around the city.
