It is said that the origin of this performance dates back to a time when people wore devil masks in surprise attacks during battles, and today it is dedicated to shrines in various regions as an expression of gratitude for a bountiful harvest. The masks of “Menburyu” are of demons, but these demons never harm people. Rather, they protect people's lives, exterminate evil spirits, and they have been loved and cherished by the people since ancient times. The demons, who have reformed after being defeated by the gods, dance powerfully while shaking their long hair called shaguma, praying for a good harvest, rain, the repose of a vengeful spirit, and the exorcism of evil spirits.
